Introduction: Welcome to the Madness

The Philippines has more than 7,600 islands, which is enough to keep even the most ambitious traveler busy until they either find enlightenment or develop a mango smoothie addiction. But if you don’t have a lifetime to hop from island to island, let me cut the chaos for you: head to Cebu and Bohol.
Why? Because these two islands have everything: powder-white beaches, diving with thresher sharks, waterfalls that look like they were Photoshopped by angels, tiny bug-eyed monkeys that stare into your soul, and let’s be honest, the best roasted pig (lechon) in the known universe.
When I first arrived in Cebu, I was instantly overwhelmed by the smells of street food, jeepneys decorated like carnival floats, and a chorus of karaoke echoing from every corner. A tricycle driver offered me a ride for “cheap price, my friend” which somehow ended up being more than my flight. But hey, I survived, and you will too. That’s part of the charm.
Cebu and Bohol are where chaos and paradise collide. It’s like your messy cousin who somehow also wins beauty pageants. And trust me, you don’t just want to visit, you need to.
Where to start? Get here without breaking the bank. Compare flights easily on:
- Skyscanner: Quick and flexible flight searches.
- Aviasales: Great for scoring hidden cheap fares.
- Kiwi.com: Perfect if you’re mixing low-cost airlines.
Plan smart. Travel insurance from Ekta Travel covers you while you leap off waterfalls and chase sardines. And if your flight gets delayed? AirHelp can help you claim compensation.
That’s how you start a trip like a pro.
Book your stay early. Cebu City has tons of hotels, from budget hostels to sky-high luxury. I recommend checking Agoda for deals on Cebu City hotels if you want some comfort before heading out, or Hostelworld if you’re the type who wants to meet backpackers who’ll convince you to go cliff diving at 2am.
First Impressions & Funny Stories
My first Cebu story began at the airport. Picture this: I walk out of the arrivals gate, bleary-eyed, only to be greeted by a man holding a cardboard sign. Did it say “Mr. Peter” or “Atlas Junkie Travel Influencer Extraordinaire”? Nope. It said: “Lechon is Life.” That’s when I knew I was in the right place.
Cebu City is not the Philippines’ prettiest city. Let’s get that out of the way. It’s loud, chaotic, and smells like equal parts grilled chicken, exhaust fumes, and durian (which, if you’ve never smelled, imagine onions wrapped in socks left out in the sun). But it’s real. And in between the honking jeepneys and random karaoke battles, you’ll find food courts dishing up bowls of halo-halo that could heal your jetlag.
One evening, I hopped on a jeepney. For the uninitiated, jeepneys are colorful open-air buses cobbled together from old US military jeeps. I asked the driver how much the ride was. He replied: “Whatever your heart tells you.” Beautiful, right? Except when I handed him a 100-peso bill (about $2), he kept the whole thing. Lesson learned.
But Cebu isn’t just chaos. It’s a springboard to paradise. And if you’re smart, you’ll book a night in the city, then escape to the islands, beaches, and waterfalls that make travelers cry with joy.
Cebu’s Best Beaches & Hidden Spots
Bantayan Island

Bantayan is like stepping into a screensaver from 2002, white sand, palm trees swaying, and locals grilling fresh fish by the beach. It’s the kind of place where time moves slower, and the only stress you’ll feel is deciding between coconut water or San Miguel beer.
Stay at luxury beachfront resorts (check Agoda), or if you want budget vibes, Hostelworld has some charming backpacker spots where hammocks double as beds.
Moalboal

Sardine run = millions of fish swirling like nature’s disco ball.
Want to see it with a guide? Book a snorkeling trip via GetYourGuide or Viator.
Malapascua Island

Home of the famous thresher sharks. Divers wake at 4am to meet these sword-tailed beauties.

It’s controversial (feeding practices), but unforgettable to float next to something the size of a bus.

On my last day in Panglao, I got lost on a motorbike. A farmer pointed me toward the beach, and I stumbled into a fishing village where kids challenged me to basketball. They crushed me 21–5, but afterwards handed me fresh mangoes.
