My Brazilian journey kicked off in Manaus, gateway to the Amazon — a place where humidity could drown your phone and the jungle hums like a thousand hidden speakers.

One afternoon, I glided down the Rio Negro when the boat driver shouted, “Boto!” (that’s pink river dolphin in Portuguese). Everyone leaned over to see — including me — until my guide hissed, “Careful! Piranhas!”

That’s São Paulo: weird, wonderful, and wired on espresso.

• Street art tour: The murals in Vila Madalena’s Beco do Batman are mind-blowing.

• Mercado Municipal: Try the massive mortadella sandwich (bring backup).

• Visit Ibirapuera Park for a peaceful reset, it’s Brazil’s version of Central Park.

Southern Surprises: Wine, Snow & German Villages?!

Just when I thought I’d seen it all, I reached the south, where Brazil pulls off its best plot twist yet.

Welcome to Gramado, a mountain town that looks straight out of a European postcard. Pitched roofs, fondue restaurants, and Christmas decorations… in July.

Nearby, in Vale dos Vinhedos, I sipped Brazilian wine (yes, really) while a tour guide switched between Portuguese and Italian like a linguistic gymnast. The vineyards were golden, the air crisp, and believe it or not, it snowed.
